Our Guide to Quality Private Art Commissions

From hotels, parks, retailers, office spaces, and so much more, public art installations are attracting people from all walks of life. It beautifies their surroundings and piques the interests of curious onlookers and art enthusiasts. This has resulted in a surge of interest in businesses partnering with public artists on private art commissions that resonate with the public.

At EG Structural, we work directly with businesses to create sculpture pieces that resonate with the public. Our work has generated a lot of buzz for the communities they’re located in and we couldn’t be more proud. Read our blog post below to learn how to begin your journey in private art commissions.

Understand What Private Art Commissions Are

Art commissions have had a very special place in our history. From the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Michaelangelo to Anish Kapoor and Janet Echelman, commissions have had a prominent role in the public art world.

Private art commissions are simply a way for artists to make money through their creative vision. Anybody can hire an artist as long as they’re open for commissions. It’s important to note that not every artist will charge the same rate and many are fairly restrictive in what projects they take.

Once you find a public artist you like, what’s next?

Provide a Clear Overview of What You’re Looking For

Clients often think the idea of commissioning an artist to work on their installation is intimidating. That’s why it’s our role to guide you through our process to ensure you understand the ins and outs of how everything will work. Forbes perfectly describes the information we share with you upon initial discussions:

  • Contract: All commissions are done under contract and will include basic terms like payment structure, visual references, reproduction and exhibition rights, etc.
  • Prices: We’ll clearly outline our prices for work and break them down based on size and/or style. We will also apply applicable sales tax and shipping costs.
  • Timeline: We’ll discuss a timeline that works for you and add it to the contract details. Additionally, we’ll talk about payment schedules, deadlines for receiving materials, previews, shipping options, and an overall time estimate.
  • Creative Process: We will use your input on what you’re looking for to begin the creative process. During our initial discussions, we’ll inform you on how we manage the creative process such as conceptual designs, research, mock-ups, and software designs.
  • Construction: We’ll inform you of the companies we’ve worked with, where custom fabrication comes into play, and how we’ll bring all the pieces together to create your private art commissions.
  • Installation: We’ll work with you to discuss how sculpture pieces will be installed on your property without creating a dysfunctional environment.

Give Us As Many Details About the Piece You Want

This will give us a clear idea of what you’re looking for and help us during the creative process. Depending on what you’re looking for, our founder and creative artist, Eric Garcia, will develop concepts based on your information. Additionally, by providing us with specific details, we can avoid any misunderstandings and wasted time in creating private art commissions that are not up to your vision.

The Expansion sculpture pieces in New York City

Famous Modern Sculpture Pieces That Enrich Their Community

Whether you’re interested in art or not, it’s hard to ignore its effects on your community. It provides a high level of engagement for residents and tourists alike, not to mention it’s a powerful beautifying tool for public spaces. That is why many municipalities are partnering with artists to create sculpture pieces that resonate with people and enrich their local economy.

At EG Structural, we believe art brings people together. A well-designed piece can bring out what is truly unique about your city and generate a lot of interest from enthusiasts from out of town. Don’t believe us? Read our article below and learn which sculpture pieces are enriching their community.

Sculpture Pieces Can Engage Viewers and Magnify What’s Great About Your City

Since its installation in 2006, Anish Kappor’s 110-ton reflective sculpture, Cloud Gate, has become an icon in downtown Chicago. While it’s hard to say exactly how many people visit Cloud Gate a year; Millennium Park, where it’s located, sees an estimated 25 million visitors annually. One of those reasons is Cloud Gate and how it entices visitors to engage with it.

Sculpture pieces are meant to test our perspective and how we see the world around us. Cloud Gate does just that by highlighting the beauty of the cityscape surrounding it while distorting and magnifying it to the delight of those in its proximity. While the piece is still relatively new, it’s right up there with the Sears Tower, the John Hancock Center, and Wrigley Field as a true Chicago icon.

Sculpture Pieces That Electrify People’s Imaginations

Another sculpture that is exciting to people is Paige Bradley’s Expansion sculpture. Found in Manhattan, Bradley sculpted a woman meditating, then shattered and transformed it with bronze and electricity to create a glowing bursting effect. Since its installation, it’s become a much-beloved piece that brings several different meanings from people who admire it. According to Women’n Art, some people see a woman bleeding light, while others see a woman transcending and turning into light with her inner power. However you interpret it, it’s a perfect example of how sculpture pieces capture a community’s imagination.

Sculpture Pieces Can Advocate for a Better Future

Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd created his sculpture, Non-Violence, also known as The Knotted Gun, after the assassination of John Lennon. It is an oversized Colt Python .357 Magnum revolver with its muzzle tied in a knot. It’s meant to symbolize an end to gun violence and enrich the consciousness of humanity by advocating for peace.

Reuterswärd’s sculpture is an excellent example of how art can have a powerful message that resonates for years to come. Since being erected at the United Nations in 1988, it’s become a symbol for social change through violence-prevention education programs. Not to mention it’s been used in various media to advocate for a peaceful future. Its simple design and admirable message are something that resonates with everyone around the world.

A custom fabrication professional is welding pieces of metal

What is Custom Fabrication?

Metal fabrication is a broad term that encompasses the entire process of building anything from raw metal materials. This means everything from cutting and shaping to the final assembly. But, to create a piece that meets your structural needs, you need custom fabrication services to truly make it your own.

EG Structural is looking to change how people perceive public art by creating incredible art installations and brand identities that excite the public. However, our mission would amount to nothing without the strong expertise of the custom fabrication professionals we partner with. Read our blog post below to learn what exactly they do and how they play an important role in the public art community.

What Do Custom Fabrication Professionals Do?

Metal fabrication contractors use manual tools alongside machinery to create metal objects or structures by bending, cutting, and assembling various metal materials. They work very closely with their clients on what they are looking for and determining the best course of action in how to achieve their vision.  When working on our projects, custom fabrication experts will examine our conceptual designs and strategically figure out what needs to be done to craft its shape and scale.

What Can You Create with Custom Fabrication?

We’re not exaggerating when saying that they can pretty much create anything. Whether you’re looking to build beautiful railings for your staircase or construction equipment parts for your project, they are proficient at the job. They’ll be able to stretch metal materials to meet the dimensions of your project. Additionally, they can use sectional metals such as I-beams, Z shapes, hollow structural sections, and bars and rods for each unique project.

8 Steps in the Custom Fabrication Process

According to Reinke & Schomann, Inc., the average metal fabrication expert will encompass some or all of the following steps in their project.

  1. Cutting
  2. Forming
  3. Welding
  4. Machining
  5. Punching
  6. Shearing
  7. Stamping
  8. Casting

The process may seem strenuous, but it’s a very important process that ensures your structure takes shape. Without the expertise of fabrication professionals and their 8 step process, our works such as our Mesa Del Sol and Tulsa Route 66 signs would not be possible.

How to Choose a Fabricator

Choosing the right custom fabrication shop that will meet your project needs is probably the most important decision you can make. It can affect every aspect of projects like the manufacturing rate, production quality, and cost-effectiveness. Additionally, it can even affect when the project will be completed. Some things to consider when bringing on a fabricator includes:

  • Experience: Just like with any job you need done, you want an experienced team working on your project. This will ensure you’re getting quality work that meets your standards.
  • Industries served: It’s also helpful to pick a custom fabrication team that is used to working in your industry or on projects of your scale. Some shops will specialize in one or two types of fabrication, while others may work with a wide variety of businesses.
  • Resources: Many fabrication shops use a variety of materials and tools to build incredible structures. When searching for the right team for your project, you may consider what materials, machinery, and tools they have on hand to get the job done.
  • Stock materials: Another important aspect to consider when choosing your fabrication shop is if they already have or can form the specific metal to your project needs. If they have a metal supplier, you may consider looking into them as well to check into their reputation.

A structural engineering professional working on a design for a piece of public art

Structural Engineering: The Secret Weapon of a Public Artist

Structural engineering is an important field in constructing large structures of many types. Many people probably associate these professionals with simply designing solutions for architectural purposes. While they do help in that area, they play a very important role in constructing public art.

For over 25 years, EG Structural has been reimagining how communities engage with public art. We take pride in highlighting the best of one’s community through functional large-scale art installations. However, none of this would be possible without the hard work and dedication of our structural engineering partners. Read our blog post below and learn more about their role in public art and why you need them after conceptual design.

What is Structural Engineering?

Structural engineers are experts in civil engineering that address the impact of physical force on force-resisting elements. They identify and measure numerical quantities to evaluate how different structural elements will respond to different forces. This is achieved through a lengthy process of analysis and design.

They are directly responsible for designing structures that withstand all types of pressure and force. Everything from bridges and buildings to public art and other large-scale structures. They will apply what they found in their analysis to ensure each structure is safe and stable. They’re essential to many large-scale projects.

A structural engineering professional’s responsibilities may include:

  • Calculating the pressure and stress that a building may encounter
  • Researching and evaluating the hazards in an area
  • Creating and testing models using computer software
  • Evaluating older buildings for structural integrity
  • Recommending repairs, additions and other changes for existing structures
  • Constructing and testing models for safety
  • Monitoring construction of new structures
  • Meeting with contractors to ensure structures are built properly
  • Developing construction budgets
  • Evaluating materials for new construction projects
  • Collaborating with architects and other engineers on building design and construction
  • Making sure structures meet the appropriate building codes, legal regulations, health, and safety requirements

How Does Structural Engineering Work with Public Art?

Just like with other types of structures they work on, public art calls for a lot of considerations. Where will it be installed? How large will it be? What material is it made of? The possibilities are endless, and engineers are qualified to meet the needs of public art. Resulting in an amazing sculpture piece that resonates with the community.

They must also have a creative mindset going into public art projects. According to Sanja Buncic, a structural engineer based in London, UK; they need to be creative and adaptable to ensure that we’re able to bring the artistic vision to life. Additionally, she mentions that “working on these types of projects is rewarding because they are dynamic and engaging. Also, because these pieces are inspiring, they really serve to pull the best out of the people who work on them as well as the people who view the finished piece.”

Make a Statement For Your Brand with Custom Art Fabrications

Everybody wants their business to stand out in their community. It should be the talk of the town; a hub that people gravitate towards because of how unique it is. One way that this can be achieved is by introducing custom art fabrications into your business. Art has the power to communicate and resonate with the public, and by investing in exceptional pieces, your business will surely stand out.

At EG Structural, we believe art brings people together. A well-designed piece can bring out what is truly unique about your property and boost awareness of your brand. Read our article below and learn how public art can enrich your brand equity.

Custom Art Fabrications Act as a Form of Communication

Artistic communication is essential in today’s diverse world because people are more conscious of design elements. Additionally, they’re more conscious about who they decide to shop or use service from. Public art installations are an excellent way for businesses to communicate with their customers by highlighting what makes their business unique.

If you’ve ever taken a long road trip and stopped at a Sinclair gas station, you might have noticed a giant green dinosaur planted in front of the building. It’s obviously another way to highlight the brand’s logo, but it’s also become a beloved sight for travelers. It’s not uncommon for people to stop at a Sinclair station, fuel up on gas and take a picture in front of the green prehistoric statue. It creates a unique experience that can only be made at the gas station chain.

Custom Art Fabrications Help Make Brand Activations Extra Special

In today’s competitive business environment, standing out means creating unique experiences for guests. One way this can be accomplished is through brand activations. Brand activations refer to the process of making your brand known to people by increasing awareness and engagement through a number of marketing functions. One of those functions includes in-store promotions and events.

One way you can make a statement for your brand is by incorporating cool sculpture pieces or large-scale art into your event. Additionally, you can use it to create an overall aesthetic, unique to your business alone. Custom art can give you the power to make your event and business memorable to guests and solidify their return for future purchases.

Public Art Installations Spread The Word… Digitally!

Say what you will about social media, its impact on marketing businesses have been instrumental. Why? Because it allows you to engage with your audience and allows them to share their thoughts about you with their followers. Additionally, when you incorporate a well-designed piece of art into your business, it has a good chance of going viral. Resulting in an increase in brand awareness and more people interested in seeing the work in person.

Art and social media go hand-in-hand, so combining the two can have a tremendous effect on your business. Look at our Roswell, New Mexico Welcome Signs. Since installing these signs, tourists have made it a point to stop and engage with them. If you jump on social media, you’ll see travelers take selfies in front of the signage and continue to journey through the town. The sign creates a fun, interactive way to bring people into the community while highlighting the town’s unique identity.

3 Ways Custom Fabrication Shapes Public Art

Think of some of your favorite large-scale art installations. How did the artist construct such an incredible hulk of beauty? Custom fabrication. For thousands of years, artists have utilized assistants and professional fabricators to forge their designs into reality. Today, communities and artists alike rely on custom fabrication professionals to construct quality art installations that generate public interest and revenue.

EG Structural has been designing large-scale art pieces for communities and commercial properties for over 25 years. We’re proud to work with incredibly skilled fabrication engineers to bring our ideas to reality. They’re the unsung heroes of our field and we’re happy to share how they shape public art.

Custom Fabrication Calls for State-of-the-Art Methods

In today’s technological world, fabrication engineers are utilizing incredible innovations to bring artists’ designs to life. Additionally, they’re knowledgeable in the best techniques to efficiently construct an artistic landmark. It’s not uncommon for custom fabrication professionals to use computer graphics, computer-aided engineering software, and geometry and object modeling to develop curve, surface, and object representations.

When it came to our Tulsa Route 66 monument, we relied heavily on the expertise of fabrication engineers. The design incorporated large loops that surround the giant Tulsa Route 66 sign. Additionally, it called for several features like lighting fixtures, counter-weights, and other features that can withstand harsh weather conditions. The assistance we received from the fabricator is instrumental in the monument’s longevity and overall structural integrity.

Fabrication Engineers are Problem-Solvers

According to Art Work Archive, most projects begin with “how are we going to do this?”. This is a question every public artist will ask themselves as they design their large-scale art piece. Fortunately, when you partner with custom fabrication engineers you’re provided with the support and knowledge needed to effectively erect gorgeous structures.

We’re artists, we know how to conceptualize and design a project. We’re not engineers. That is why fabrication engineers are paramount in the installation process. They’ll know how to construct the monument and the best way to install it to secure structural integrity.

When it came to our Village of Los Lunas Welcome signage, custom fabrication was key. Because the off-ramp where the signs are located is elevated, the foundation was not a natural landscape. After testing the soil to determine its strength and depth, we had our fabricators construct and place a counterweight to the 22-foot high monument.

Custom Fabrication Involves Imagination and Innovation

We already mentioned that fabrication engineers are problem-solvers. They’re also very in-tune with the artists and creatives they work with. In order to bring our concepts to life, they work directly with us to figure out what engineering pieces need to be added to secure a quality piece. They’ll work with us to figure out how the art installation will function and how it is actually built. This involves an open mind and the ability to come up with ways to make the installation larger than life.

EG Structural Large Scale Art Sculpture Pieces Tulsa Route 66

Designing Sculpture Pieces That Inspire Community Engagement

For centuries, people have used art as a tool to express themselves and capture the realities around them. Its mediums take many forms, ranging from painting, drawings, and large sculpture pieces. Today, art is a necessary component of our city’s infrastructure. Think of some of the most prominent cities in the United States, you’ll notice how large-scale sculptures play a critical role in their identity.

EG Structural constructs public art installations that invoke a response. We capture the unique qualities of a community and memorialize them through fine art. In partnership with custom fabrication professionals, EG Structural’s Eric Garcia is happy to highlight your identity with an intricate design. Learn how sculpture pieces inspire the communities they are located in and what this means for you.

Understand Proportion and Scale

One of the basic principles of constructing sculpture pieces is utilizing proportions and size. Sometimes it’s necessary to adapt the proportions of the piece to suit its position to the viewer. Imagine looking at a sculpture high on a building. The piece will likely be made large on the upper part of the structure to ensure it reduces foreshortening

Additionally, the scale of the sculpture needs to be considered in relation to its surroundings. When it’s located inside a building, it needs to fit the area it resides. When it comes to open-air sculptures – art installations that are located outside – you need to take into account that they’ll appear less massive in the studio.

How Large-Scale Sculpture Pieces Leave Communities in Awe

EG Structural loves creating things we’ve never done before. Each sculpture tells a story and highlights the unique features of a community or business. When creating pieces that symbolize their identity, usually it’s more significant with large-scale designs. For instance, take our Tulsa Route 66 sign. It’s a powerhouse of a monument that demands attention from passersby.

We’ve heard countless stories and comments from people saying they had to stop to see it up close. Often we’d hear them say how amazing the structure is because of its size. From afar, it already looks big, but up close? It’s even more impressive.

Large-Scale Sculpture Pieces Resonate with Tourists

Think of other large-scale sculpture pieces across the country. Cloud Gate in Chicago attracts tourists from around the world to admire its enormous reflective exterior. Or look at New York City’s line of statues that live in Central Park, honoring pioneering women from history and literature. The sheer size of art installations can gain attention and have a significant impact on its viewers’ feelings and your community.

Art can be used as a powerful tool to attract travelers to the piece. Resulting in further exploration of your community, leading to more money going towards local businesses and building a strong identity.

EG Structural's Private Commission sculpture for Hine's Development

EG Structural Has Partnered with Hines on a Private Commission Sculpture

When it comes to art, it’s certainly true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone reacts differently based on their preferences, experiences, and history. But beyond personal preference, the right piece of art can inspire results. Recently, Hines Development, a real estate investment, development, and management firm contracted EG Structural on a private commission project to produce a sculpture that complements their new Phoenix office’s interior. We’re proud of the work and are happy to share the details about it with you.

The Root of the Hines Project

Hines has been hard at work in remodeling their Biltmore corporate office building to develop an attractive environment for its tenants. One of the ways they achieve this was to incorporate a sculpture that would complement their contemporary lobby style. When Hines came to EG Structural with this idea, we were instantly interested in developing a sculpture piece that represents their history and growth.

The Creativity That Went Into the Private Commission Project

When discussing what Hines wanted in their sculpture, they simply sought that would inspire tenants and guests of the building. They gave EG Structural free reign to conceptualize, develop, and construct a design that would enrich their office atmosphere.

EG Structural’s founder and artist, Eric Garcia, personally developed several designs that embodied the spirit of this wonderful organization. Finally, one design stuck out from the rest. One that incorporates elements of nature, motion, and growth in an 18×7 foot space to inspire those who see it.

Eric used an assortment of mixed media for the commission project such as wood, styrofoam, paper mache, paper towels, acrylic, and plaster to construct a large tree with leaves falling from the branches. The tree symbolizes the idea of growth and stability, correlating with Hines’ experience and continued expansion. Additionally, the trunk and branches of the tree have meticulously placed linework to create the perception of motion, representing the company’s forward-thinking direction. The sculpture piece also incorporates falling leaves to signify the company’s achievements.

The design, construction, and integration of the sculpture took almost 3 months to complete and we could not be happier with the results. We’ve received tremendous feedback from Hines and people across social media about the beauty of the sculpture’s design and how it invokes such strong feelings.
