Create Public Art Landmarks That Embody the Heart of Your City

Public art is an incredible economic innovator that generates excitement towards one’s community. It encompasses a wide variety of creative expressions that brings people together through dazzling construction and detail. While some people view public art landmarks are a way to beautify spaces (they’re not wrong), art can be used to initiate civic dialogue and give life to the community identity. Achieving success with an art installation is a challenging task, but it’s worth it in the end.

EG Structural is on a mission to enrich communities with exciting large-scale art installations that drive their economy and beautify their spaces. We’re founded on the principle that functional sculpture pieces can exhibit the incredible identity behind communities and commercial properties. Creating public landmarks has a tremendous effect on what makes our towns special – even when you don’t realize it. Read our blog post below and learn how public landmarks can enrich your community.

Public Art Landmarks Can Evoke Civic Dialogue

For centuries, people have been designing art that is a response to affairs happening around them. Today is no different; many artists are expressing their frustrations through art. Moreover, it has an astounding effect on the public by engaging them in civic dialogue.

Strategically executed public art can raise awareness towards issues plaguing the community. For instance, art is being used to speak out against racism, environmental degradation, and other social issues. Americans for the Arts highlights the AIDS Memorial Quilt, which features over 70,000 individual quilts that have been displayed on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Not only does it bring an array of color to the space, but it also raises awareness of HIV/AIDS and leverages support for research and education.

Large-Scale Art Brings Meaning to Communities

Not only does public art bring awareness to important societal issues, but it also raises awareness of a community’s identity. Whether you are looking at their history, people, culture, or geography, every community is unique. As public artists, it is our job to create designs that resonate and highlight the community’s rich history. Doing so results in a deeper pride from residents, and demands the attention of out-of-towners.

Our Roswell, New Mexico welcome signs were designed to invite travelers to stop and engage with the signage. Additionally, we ensured Roswell residents were equally as enthralled by the sculpture pieces to generate excitement. During the development of this project, we conducted extensive research into the town’s history and incorporated community feedback to gauge residents’ opinions of these landmarks.

Since installing these welcome signs, tourists have made it a point to stop and engage with them. If you jump on social media, you’ll see travelers take selfies in front of the signage and continue to journey through the town. The sign creates a fun, interactive way to bring people into the community while highlighting the town’s unique identity.

Public Art Landmarks Can Enhance Appreciation for Art

As you may know, large-scale art installations can inspire awe, and draw out deep emotions like happiness, sadness, and anger. Additionally, it can satisfy our appetite for something beautiful and engaging. Art appreciation is in the details, the craftsmanship, and the creative vision and execution of an idea.

Well-executed public art reveals its meaning over time, influencing repeated visits and greater interest in communities. Additionally, it has the ability to beautify our shared environment and celebrate the things that make us great. Not everyone can visit an art museum or attend a gallery, but public art is for everyone. It’s our job as artists to invite everyone to engage with our pieces.

EG Structural Has Your Community in Mind

EG Structural develops public art installations that embody a community and attract individuals to the landmark. Moreover, our work will grab the attention of out-of-towners and generate a new source of tourism dollars. We have a passion for public art, and fully believe it can set your city apart from the rest. Contact EG Structural today to learn how our founder and artist, Eric Garcia can help beautify your city.

What Open-Air Sculpture Pieces Can Do For Your Community

Public art installations have long been recognized as an asset for communities. However, because many of its benefits are intangible, its priority is often overlooked. Yet, several communities around the world that prioritize open-air sculpture pieces see increased levels of community engagement and social unity.

For over 25 years, EG Structural’s founder and artist, Eric Garcia, has worked with a number of communities to develop sculpture pieces that identify their unique identities. We believe art is a powerful tool and when it’s created by the right hands, it can elevate your city’s wellbeing. Read our blog post below and learn what open-air sculptures and other public art installations can do for your town.

Open-Air Sculpture Pieces Promotes Social Cohesion

A study conducted by Knight Foundation in 2012 highlights how important public art is in community socialization. They surveyed approximately 43,000 people in various cities, and found “social offerings, openness and welcome-ness” and “aesthetics of a place — its art, parks and green spaces” ranked higher than education, safety, and local economy as a driver for their loyalty to their towns.

It is up to the city planner and recreation department to bind its resources, facilities, and settings to create spaces that inspire social openness. One way they’re achieving this is by combining their beautification projects with public art installations. In that Knight Foundation study, the organization found Philadelphia residents, in particular, ranked viewing public art as the second most popular activity. Ahead of hiking, jogging, biking, and other recreational activities.

Sculpture Pieces Can Drive Tourism

One of the biggest things communities benefit from when installing open-air sculptures and other public art pieces is its ability to draw in tourists. Take Cloud Gate, or The Bean, in Chicago. Everyday people flock to Millennium Park to see this enormous reflective monument and engage with the piece. According to Stone Fox Chicago, 12 million tourists visit the bean each year and it generates a lot of revenue for the city and the surrounding businesses.

Though, Chicago is a major city and attracts out of towners regardless of the public art they install. Smaller towns and cities that install their sculpture pieces attract people from all over as well. For example, our Roswell, New Mexico Welcome Signs have enticed passersby with inviting designs that highlight the town’s fun history of the paranormal.  As seen from the people who plaster their stickers from all over the world, the structures promote a high level of engagement. Additionally, it’s become a hot spot for travelers to take photos and share them across their social media profiles, spreading their brand even further.

Open-Air Sculpture Pieces Can Involve The Entire Community

One of the things we learned from our Roswell Welcome Signs was how important it is to gauge how the residents feel about your public art. While tourists will enjoy the signage, they won’t have to look at them every day. So it was important for us to hold town meetings and get feedback from residents before fabrication and installation. Fortunately, they loved the signage and we moved forward with the concepts.

Additionally, residents can be a part of the construction and maintenance process for the structure. According to Snyder & Associates, citizens and organizations who volunteer to help in these areas minimize the overall cost for the city. Moreover, it gives locals the ability to feel like they’re a part of the community, and down the line feel proud they’re a part of this public art piece.

The Process of Large-Scale Art Private Commissions

Creating large-scale art pieces is a rewarding experience. Not just for us artists, but for those who commission us for their projects. Whether it’s for your commercial property or a municipal space, private art commissions empower the areas they occupy.

EG Structural was founded on the principle of creating functional public art installations that evoke a response. We work with you to identify your unique brand identity and ways to bring it to life through large-scale sculpture pieces. Read our article below and learn how we achieve this.

Planning

Just like with any art piece, planning ensures the project goes off without a hitch. It is during this stage that we identify key components of your brand and what exactly you are looking for in your large-scale art commission.

We conduct extensive research into your brand; looking into your history, location, local amenities, and other unique characteristics of your community. Once we compile these details, we hand them off to our artist and founder, Eric Garcia to work his magic.

It’s not uncommon for us to have a concept already in mind for certain projects. But to truly connect with your brand, we use our research to help us add elements associated with your community.

For instance, Roswell, New Mexico is more than just a UFO town. When we were commissioned to create welcome signs for this community we wanted to incorporate elements that symbolize their community (with a UFO twist!). As a result, we came up with three themes for the signs: the 1947 UFO crash, a flying saucer, and the town’s agricultural roots.

During the planning phase of this project, we heavily encouraged public feedback. We met with city officials and held several town meetings to give residents the chance to voice their opinions on our designs. Through this, we were able to identify elements that evoke a response, not only from tourists but residents.

Implementing Large-Scale Art

The most strenuous stage of large-scale art is the installation process. This involves many elements to bring the project to life. Including:

  • Coordinating production
  • Getting the site ready for installation
  • Transporting the large-scale art piece
  • Efficiently installing the piece on the site

EG Structural works with several professionals in identifying these key components for a successful installation. Additionally, we work closely with city officials on setting up the location for the sculpture piece, this involves soil testing, permitting, zoning, and identifying public and private land. Also, we work with structural engineers to develop solutions that help the structure withstand the area’s weather and other harsh conditions.

The Tulsa Route 66 project challenged us in a number of ways due to its large scale. We had to account for Oklahoma’s range of severe weather conditions and what it means for a project of its size. Additionally, being at the center of a round-about, the monument had to be installed with drivers’ safety in mind. The structure is also in the landing direction of the Tulsa airport. So, we worked with city officials and federal aviation guidelines to ensure the installation’s lighting would not impact the planes overhead.

Ensure Your Large-Scale Art Stands the Test of Time

While we use materials that are capable of maintaining the structural integrity of your sculpture, it will need routine maintenance. This ensures your sculpture piece will stand the test of time and visitors can engage with it for years to come. According to Artwork Archive, a typical maintenance plan includes:

  • Estimate of any upfront costs of conservation
  • Discuss ways to keep the art safe from the public
  • Create a plan and timeline for routine maintenance and conservation (repainting, etc.)
  • Identify how to maintain the large-scale art piece and what materials should be used.
  • Allocate a budget for maintenance

Beautify Your Property With Commercial Sculpture Pieces

Art is an essential part of our daily lives. This is especially true in our professional environments. A 2014 study conducted by Harvard shows that employees respond positively to art in the workplace. The research indicates murals and commercial sculpture pieces promote social interaction, elicit emotional responses, enhances the workplace environment, and fosters learning. Whether you’re a B2B or a B2C art is a powerful tool to attract/retain employees and customers to your business.

At EG Structural, we’re more than just a structural design company. We’re creative thinkers on a mission to create extraordinary sculpture pieces for ordinary spaces. We’ve seen firsthand how impactful art can be on one’s business and we strive to beautify commercial properties. Read our article below to learn more about the impact art has on the workplace.

Commercial Sculptures Liven Up Offices

According to Work Design, art is being used to break up and define large, open office spaces. Designers are using more kinetic art sculpture pieces and other large-scale art to take advantage of high ceilings and large expansive areas. Additionally, the larger open spaces allow for more glass art and innovative light installations. Also, art is being used as the centerpiece for lunch and lounge areas. Why? Because art has an incredible knack for bringing people together and promoting social interaction.

While there are many different styles and types of art you can go with, it’s important to note what is trending. Traditional commercial spaces are transitioning to more contemporary designs to suit a more contemporary workplace. Designs that incorporate photography, murals, and sculpture pieces give commercial properties a more modern, welcoming feel.

Art Installations Make a Statement About Company Culture

Recently, EG Structural had the pleasure of partnering with Hines Development on a private commission project to produce a sculpture for their new Phoenix office. They’re an incredible company with developments across the United States. They’re continuously growing and experienced in what they do. We wanted to capture that in our sculpture piece to highlight the company’s strong company culture.

EG Structural’s founder and artist, Eric Garcia, personally developed several designs that embodied the spirit of this wonderful organization. Finally, one design stuck out from the rest. One that incorporates elements of nature, motion, and growth in an 18×7 foot space to inspire those who see it.

Eric used an assortment of mixed media for the commission project such as wood, styrofoam, paper mache, paper towels, acrylic, and plaster to construct a large tree with leaves falling from the branches. The tree symbolizes the idea of growth and stability, correlating with Hines’ experience and continued expansion.

Commercial sculptures and other art projects are effective branding tools. When you incorporate the right art it can support the company’s corporate identity, history, values, and overall mission. The piece is uniquely yours. Not just for being in your building, but for the meaning behind it.

Enhance The Architecture with Commercial Sculptures

For centuries, designers have been looking for effective ways to combine the beauty of art and architecture. The balance can be tricky to get right, but once it’s done it creates a wonderful environment. The fusion between art and architecture can turn an ordinary building into one that demands attention and attracts people.

Chapman Taylor describes the fusion perfectly, “Art needs an appropriately built environment within which it can be showcased to greatest effect, while architecture needs art to turn bricks, steel, and concrete into a space in which people want to live, to learn, to shop, and to work.”

The Power Public Art Installations Has On Your Community

Public spaces and marketplaces are incredibly vital in every community. Without them, our communities would be dull and without character. One way cities and towns strive to build an engaging public space and drive people towards marketplaces is through public art installations. Art plays a critical role in the beautification projects, and further builds an identity unique to the cities and neighborhoods they reside.

Whether you’re a community space or a company, we believe you have a story. At EG Structural, it is our mission to bring it to life. We’re founded on the principle that functional public art can exhibit the incredible identity behind the communities and commercial properties where they stand. The power public art has on our communities is tremendous and that is why we’ve made this article – to highlight how it enriches our communities and drives our economy.

Public Art Installations Promote Interaction

According to Marquette University, public art is usually based on “shared meanings between the artist and the community, and consists of actions or works executed on behalf of the community as a whole”. This allows the community to create symbols associated with their spaces, creating an enjoyable and valuable experience for people who interact with the installation.

Look at public art installations like The Cloud Gate in Chicago or the LOVE sculpture in Philadelphia. These installations are highly interactive in the fact that they attract locals and tourists to engage with them. If you ever visit these incredible sculpture pieces, you’ll see thousands of people a day taking photos of the art, tour guides explaining their meaning, and admire its sheer magnificence.

Public Art Captivates The Youth of Our Community

Another way public art installations play a critical role in our community’s prosperousness is by connecting with the youth. Engaging them has several benefits. One is that it brings adults into the picture and influences them to engage with the art and area as well. The other is that it builds an identity and appreciation for one’s neighborhood and city early on.

An employee of EG Structural who grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, reflects on one of the city’s most popular public art installations, “one of my favorite sculpture pieces is easily the Shuttlecocks in front of the Nelson-Atkins Museum. As a child, it captured my imagination and was always a must-see when I’d walk through the park. Now that I am an adult I look upon the art fondly and every time I think of them, it’s like a trip back to my hometown.”

Public art installations are an incredible tool to build appreciation for one’s home. As seen by our employee, it allows us to reminisce and transports us back to the places we love. As public artists, that’s something we strive for in almost every project we undertake.

Public Art Installations Provide Social Value and Placemaking

As its name suggests, public art is uniquely accessible to almost all community members and passersby. It enables people to experience art in their daily lives and drives engagement. It encourages people to pay attention and perceive more deeply the environment they occupy. Also, public art stimulates learning and thought about our society and what it truly means to be part of a community.

Additionally, public art installations promote collaboration. The process typically asks the artist to collaborate with many community members throughout the project’s development. As a result, it builds a sense of shared ownership and collective connection to the sculpture piece. It becomes more than just a large-scale art project, it becomes a community energizer.

EG Structural Forges Ideas into Reality

The foundation of every large-scale art project is the desire to craft a story through visual design. A custom fabrication professional is sawing a sheet of metal

3 Ways Custom Fabrication Shapes Public Art

Think of some of your favorite large-scale art installations. How did the artist construct such an incredible hulk of beauty? Custom fabrication. For thousands of years, artists have utilized assistants and professional fabricators to forge their designs into reality. Today, communities and artists alike rely on custom fabrication professionals to construct quality art installations that generate public interest and revenue.

EG Structural has been designing large-scale art pieces for communities and commercial properties for over 25 years. We’re proud to work with incredibly skilled fabrication engineers to bring our ideas to reality. They’re the unsung heroes of our field and we’re happy to share how they shape public art.

Custom Fabrication Calls for State-of-the-Art Methods

In today’s technological world, fabrication engineers are utilizing incredible innovations to bring artists’ designs to life. Additionally, they’re knowledgeable in the best techniques to efficiently construct an artistic landmark. It’s not uncommon for custom fabrication professionals to use computer graphics, computer-aided engineering software, and geometry and object modeling to develop curve, surface, and object representations.

When it came to our Tulsa Route 66 monument, we relied heavily on the expertise of fabrication engineers. The design incorporated large loops that surround the giant Tulsa Route 66 sign. Additionally, it called for several features like lighting fixtures, counter-weights, and other features that can withstand harsh weather conditions. The assistance we received from the fabricator is instrumental in the monument’s longevity and overall structural integrity.

Fabrication Engineers are Problem-Solvers

According to Art Work Archive, most projects begin with “how are we going to do this?”. This is a question every public artist will ask themselves as they design their large-scale art piece. Fortunately, when you partner with custom fabrication engineers you’re provided with the support and knowledge needed to effectively erect gorgeous structures.

We’re artists, we know how to conceptualize and design a project. We’re not engineers. That is why fabrication engineers are paramount in the installation process. They’ll know how to construct the monument and the best way to install it to secure structural integrity.

When it came to our Village of Los Lunas Welcome signage, custom fabrication was key. Because the off-ramp where the signs are located is elevated, the foundation was not a natural landscape. After testing the soil to determine its strength and depth, we had our fabricators construct and place a counterweight to the 22-foot high monument.

Custom Fabrication Involves Imagination and Innovation

We already mentioned that fabrication engineers are problem-solvers. They’re also very in-tune with the artists and creatives they work with. In order to bring our concepts to life, they work directly with us to figure out what engineering pieces need to be added to secure a quality piece. They’ll work with us to figure out how the art installation will function and how it is actually built. This involves an open mind and the ability to come up with ways to make the installation larger than life.

EG Structural Turns Ideas into Reality

A design means nothing without the help of custom fabrication engineers. They’re an incredible asset to the public artist and must secure the longevity and integrity of the structure. Whenever we work on a large-scale art project, we look to them for their knowledge and experience.

EG Structural is fortunate to have partnered with several wonderful individuals to design public art that highlights their unique communities. We combine intense research, strong conceptual design, custom fabrication, and engineering expertise to develop landmarks that inspire engagement. We help build an identity that exhibits what it means to be a part of a community. Contact us today to learn about our expertise and how we can help boost your identity.

EG Structural Large Scale Art Sculpture Pieces Tulsa Route 66

Designing Sculpture Pieces That Inspire Community Engagement

For centuries, people have used art as a tool to express themselves and capture the realities around them. Its mediums take many forms, ranging from painting, drawings, and large sculpture pieces. Today, art is a necessary component of our city’s infrastructure. Think of some of the most prominent cities in the United States, you’ll notice how large-scale sculptures play a critical role in their identity.

EG Structural constructs public art installations that invoke a response. We capture the unique qualities of a community and memorialize them through fine art. In partnership with custom fabrication professionals, EG Structural’s Eric Garcia is happy to highlight your identity with an intricate design. Learn how sculpture pieces inspire the communities they are located in and what this means for you.

Understand Proportion and Scale

One of the basic principles of constructing sculpture pieces is utilizing proportions and size. Sometimes it’s necessary to adapt the proportions of the piece to suit its position to the viewer. Imagine looking at a sculpture high on a building. The piece will likely be made large on the upper part of the structure to ensure it reduces foreshortening

Additionally, the scale of the sculpture needs to be considered in relation to its surroundings. When it’s located inside a building, it needs to fit the area it resides. When it comes to open-air sculptures – art installations that are located outside – you need to take into account that they’ll appear less massive in the studio.

How Large-Scale Sculpture Pieces Leave Communities in Awe

EG Structural loves creating things we’ve never done before. Each sculpture tells a story and highlights the unique features of a community or business. When creating pieces that symbolize their identity, usually it’s more significant with large-scale designs. For instance, take our Tulsa Route 66 sign. It’s a powerhouse of a monument that demands attention from passersby.

We’ve heard countless stories and comments from people saying they had to stop to see it up close. Often we’d hear them say how amazing the structure is because of its size. From afar, it already looks big, but up close? It’s even more impressive.

Large-Scale Sculpture Pieces Resonate with Tourists

Think of other large-scale sculpture pieces across the country. Cloud Gate in Chicago attracts tourists from around the world to admire its enormous reflective exterior. Or look at New York City’s line of statues that live in Central Park, honoring pioneering women from history and literature. The sheer size of art installations can gain attention and have a significant impact on its viewers’ feelings and your community.

Art can be used as a powerful tool to attract travelers to the piece. Resulting in further exploration of your community, leading to more money going towards local businesses and building a strong identity.

EG Structural's creative wayfinding signage for Albuquerque Route 66 signs

What is Creative Wayfinding and How Can It Help the Public?

Navigation is fundamental in our daily lives. This is especially true when visiting new cities and large businesses as it makes it easier to understand where you need to go. One way municipalities and businesses ensure easy navigation is through creative wayfinding. It’s an incredible resource that guides you to your desired destination. Many organizations are using wayfinding signage to highlight their unique identity. As a result, the signage acts as a functional piece of art that benefits tourists and citizens.

At EG Structural, we’ve designed several creative wayfinding pieces, such as Mesa del Sol and Albuquerque Route 66 signs, to enrich the community experience. Learn how wayfinding can play a critical role in reaching your organization’s goals.

Creative Wayfinding Helps You Stand Out

We interact with wayfinding all the time. You’ll find them in grocery stores, retail shops, roadways, airports, and much more. The purpose of wayfinding is to get you from point A to point B as directly as possible. If the planning, design, and implementation are developed appropriately, users will be able to make an educated directional choice. However, this is not achieved without the expertise of a designer.

Moreover, there’s huge potential to create signage that informs, but it stands out. This not only creates a unique identity for your brand and community but also gets eyes on the sign. As part of our Mesa del Sol project, our goal was to effectively guide users to their destination with a complementing theme. That theme includes the surrounding natural plant life and the area’s modern architectural design. As a result, our creative wayfinding signage added another level of identity to the area.

It is Signage That Offers a Helping Hand

Think about all the times you’ve taken a trip somewhere you’ve never been before. Remember how you might have missed that turn in Albuquerque or kept driving on that long stretch of road? The whole purpose of wayfinding is to help you avoid these situations.  Nightingale said it best: “The goal is not to herd people but to encourage successful exploration”.

There are so many destinations people can visit, with many possible routes they can use to get to them. A lot of people take wayfinding for granted when driving in a new area, but a lot goes into the signage. For instance, we had to follow strict guidelines set by the Department of Transportation to construct our Albuquerque Route 66 signs. We had to adhere to regulations such as:

  • Use specific fonts and font sizes
  • Use a specific size for our arrows
  • Make the signs reflective so drivers can effectively see them at night
  • And much more

While we faced these challenges during the design phase of the project, we were able to adapt. These constraints allowed us to design something that’s equally attractive as it is functional. As a result, we put a spotlight on the city’s historic stretch of Route 66 while creating helpful navigation signs for passersby.

Creative Wayfinding Serves Small Communities

When we constructed the Mesa del Sol signage, we made sure it can be easily adapted to the community. We made it so the client could change the destinations on the signs in the event a business is no longer there.  We knew we had to create something to make it easier for our client to adapt their signage to new community additions.

One of our goals with Mesa del Sol was to inform users of the businesses that are there. Wayfinding is a valuable tool for communities, as it highlights the businesses in the area. Moreover, they inspire people to explore and engage with the community.  We develop each of our signs to invoke a strong emotion and generate interest in the area.

EG Structural's Private Commission sculpture for Hine's Development

EG Structural Has Partnered with Hines on a Private Commission Sculpture

When it comes to art, it’s certainly true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone reacts differently based on their preferences, experiences, and history. But beyond personal preference, the right piece of art can inspire results. Recently, Hines Development, a real estate investment, development, and management firm contracted EG Structural on a private commission project to produce a sculpture that complements their new Phoenix office’s interior. We’re proud of the work and are happy to share the details about it with you.

The Root of the Hines Project

Hines has been hard at work in remodeling their Biltmore corporate office building to develop an attractive environment for its tenants. One of the ways they achieve this was to incorporate a sculpture that would complement their contemporary lobby style. When Hines came to EG Structural with this idea, we were instantly interested in developing a sculpture piece that represents their history and growth.

The Creativity That Went Into the Private Commission Project

When discussing what Hines wanted in their sculpture, they simply sought that would inspire tenants and guests of the building. They gave EG Structural free reign to conceptualize, develop, and construct a design that would enrich their office atmosphere.

Additionally, the trunk and branches of the tree have meticulously placed linework to create the perception of motion, representing the company’s forward-thinking direction. The sculpture piece also incorporates falling leaves to signify the company’s achievements.

The design, construction, and integration of the sculpture took almost 3 months to complete and we could not be happier with the results. We’ve received tremendous feedback from Hines and people across social media about the beauty of the sculpture’s design and how it invokes such strong feelings.

EG Structural Is Open For Corporate and Government Commission Projects
